It’s the first and most infinitely precious thing that we can ever give to our children. Our parents sacrificed so that we could have it, and their parents before them, and so on, back through the generations to when man began. How we ached last week to again give life-or to give it back. Surely, we all shared that agonizing wish, as we watched, again and again, with horror, disbelief, numbness, the loss of seven heroes to a blue morning sky. For them, there was no second chance. There is a risk in simply existing, but we all take life so for granted that it rarely gets a second thought. For astronauts, danger lies in all directions, but especially centers on thousands of gallons of highly volatile fuels. Fuels, we now have painfully etched on our national memory, that are virtual deadly bombs. AjErShA. And so it is, certainly on a lesser scale, that farmers live intimately with danger. Accidents lurk in many places not so often by violent explosion, but in whirring knives, crushing chains and spinning PTO’s, that rip limbs, sever ar teries, mangle flesh. Because this risk, this danger, is ever present, it should stir in us thoughts of another gift. The gift of blood. York County’s Farmers Association is not only thinking about this problem, it’s doing something. A Blood Donor program is now in the works. ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE Binkley & Hurst Bros., Inc. . WED. PROGRAM STARTS 7:30 P.M. Perhaps other counties have or are planning similar programs; if they aren’t, perhaps they should. Within the donations of a pint of blood from a mere twenty percent of the membership-that’s about 150-the entire group of members is covered for free blood replacement in the event of such need. And that includes spouses, family and close relatives, even, I understand, immediate employees of their farm operation. All by giving a pint of blood Yours. Mine. Guilty. That’s me. Guilty of not calling for an appointment im mediately when the notice first came, although I did scribble the date on the calendar. But it took a followup call from volunteer Ruth Gallagher to get me moving to make that first ever personal commitment to give blood. Selfish? To some degree. If my farmer, or our kids, or our parents, need blood, I want to know there’s a supply available. But we also have good friends scattered all over the county, and we want it for them, too. But it won’t happen unless plenty of people are willing to give up an hour or so to share what medical technology has yet to leam to make on its own. Somehow it seems fitting that, in memory of those seven who never had a second chance, we should do this small thing to offer a second chance to another. If you are physically able, please consider sharing a gift of blood. A gift of life. 45
