A2B-Lmcaster Farming, Saturday, February 8,1986 New award ’highlights Lancaster 4-H Livestock banquet BY JACK HUBLEY LANCASTER Capping a lengthy and distinguished 4-H career with honors, Jan Waltz of Manheim became the first recipient of the Jason L. Weaver Memorial Leadership Award at the Lancaster County 4-H Livestock Banquet held at the Farm and Home Center on Thursday evening. This was the kickoff year for the annual award presented in memory of the late Jason L. Weaver, a well-known 4-H leader from Quarryville. The award was presented by Weaver’s wife, Or pha, his son Ken Weaver and his daughters Kathy Wenger, Kay Weaver, Karen Kofroth and Kim Weaver. “I wasn’t expecting it,” said the 19-year-old Penn State freshman, who remembers Weaver as a positive influence during his early years in the 4-H program. “He clipped my first steer for the Farm Show,” recalled Waltz. The son of Ardith and Nancy Waltz, Jan’s ability to present cattle in the showring was evidenced by numerous wins during the past show season. In addition to being named top showman at the Farm Show and National Charolais Show, Waltz placed fifth in the highly com petitive National Junior Angus Show in Oklahoma. In his first year at Penn State as an animal production major, Waltz is a member of the Block and Bridle Club as well as an area director of the Junior Charolais Association and the president of the state Junior Angus Association. “I’ve always been impressed by his assertiveness as a leader in the (beef) club,” said Lancaster Extension livestock agent, Chet Hughes. “He has a genuine in terest in the beef cattle business.” More than 200 countians turned out on Thursday night to honor club members and supporters of the * Red Rose Beef Club and Woolies Club. “We had a very good year,” summed up Chet Hughes, noting that the county’s meats judging team placed first in the state, then went on to place fifth in national competition, separated by only three points from the second-place team. The county’s junior livestock judging team placed fifth in the state, while the senior team placed sixth at the state level. The evening’s top sheep award winner was Ellen Lewis, who was named Shepherd of the Year and received the revolving trophy from last year’s recipient, Tricia Musser. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Lewis, of Mount Joy, Ellen showed the supreme champion ewe in the county roundup, as well as the champion junior Hampshire ewe at Farm Show Other members recognized for their show season ac complishments were as follows: Sffi: Hay Loaders Accumulators Allen Rakes & Tedders David O.
