A quick tour around your garden may bring shrieks of dismay to your lips. In many sections of the state, spring bulbs are not only showing their tips, but in some sunny spots are even showing their buds. Help! How do we protect our bulbs from being blasted by months of icy weather? According to Delaware County Extension agricultural agent Jeff Jabco, you may be able to save your spring blossoms if you mulch them now. Use a thick layer of heavy mulch clean straw is perfect. Lighter mulches made of composting leaves are apt to blow away in winter winds. The point of using mulch is to keep the ground temperature evenly cool and prevent accelerated bulb development. Mulch will also protect your plants from “heaving” out of the soil with each cycle of freeze and frost. As the days become warm in spring, fluff up the mulch covering with a fork to allow some light and air in, but don’t be too quick to remove the covering altogether. Once your plants no longer need the protection, add the mulch to your compost pile or tuck it around the base of plants to help hold the moisture and keep down the weeds.
