BSO-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 11,1986 ELVERSON - Members of the Twin Valley FFA who participated in the national FFA livestock judging and showmanship contests returned with gold and silver medals for their efforts. In the stiffest competition, Rod Stoltzfus earned a silver medal in livestock judging, while the Pennsylvania FFA team earned a bronze medal in overal com petition. Rod, with Greg Woodring from the James Buchanan FFA Chapter; and John Eaton, Jr. from the Red Lion FFA chapter, formed the PA FFA livestock judging team, having previously placed first through third respectively in the state contest last June. The team was accompanied by Ronald Frederick, vocational agriculture teacher at Twin Valley High School. Rod was reared to place six classes of animals, breeding and market classes of beef, sheep, and swine. One class of oral reasons was given on each type of livestock. USDA market grades were assigned to classes of market swine, slaughter steers, and feeder steers. Contestants also had to select the Twin Valley FFA'ers win national awards best beef heifers and gilts for breeding stock from animals presented, using both sight characteristics and production data. A 1985 graduate of Twin Valley High School, Rod is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Stoltzful of R 2 Elverson. He was the president of both the Twin Valley and Berks County FFA Chapter in the 1984-86 school year. Rod won the right to represent Pennsylvania by winning the State FFA judging contest last June. He had also won the judging contests at the Kutztown, Allentown, and Reading Fairs and the Berks County FFA Contest. He is em ployed on the Titus Beam livestock farm. In livestock showmanship competition, three Twin Valley members competed and earned awards. These students, selected at random from those interested, helped to present the animals being judged to the livestock judging contestants. Kate Hicks and Bob Bell both received gold medals, with Ann Kline receiving a silver medal. Kate is a senior at Twin Valley, Ann a junior, and Bob a sophomore. All have livestock projects. The national livestock judging contest was sponsored by Purina Mills, Inc. The contest is held in conjunction with the American Royal Livestock and Horse Show in Kansas City, Mo during the 58th national FFA convention. The livestock contest is one of the oldest FFA contests, having been held in Kansas City annually since 1928. It, as with all other National FFA Contests, pits state winning teams against each other. Plaques and trophies are awarded to the winning teams and individuals. As the sponsor, Purina provides travel money for each team and their advisor, as well as an awards breakfast for all participants.
