-Lancaster Famine, Saturday, Dacembar 28,1985 60 Cornell begins bull testing ITHACA, NY - Cornell University has begun a five-month performance test for a group of 89 young bulls now enrolled in the annual test program. The “Class of ’B6” consists of 21 Angus, 3 Red Angus, 31 Polled Herefords, 9 Charolais, 22 Sim mentals, 2 Shorthorns, and 1 Salers, according to William M. Greene, director of the New York Bull Test Station located at the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell. Seventy-one bulls are from breeders in New York State, and 18 are from New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ver mont, and New Hampshire. A Cornell Cooperative Extension associate and beef specialist, Greene says that the testing program offers beef cattle breeders the opportunity to acquire bulls with superior genetic and economically important traits. As the official bull test station for New York State, Cornell annually tests bull calves for their per formance in terms of weight per day-of-age, average daily weight gain, structural soundness, and frame score, among other factors. The test is conducted at Cornell’s Animal Science Teaching and Research Center in Harford. Initiated in 1979, the bull testing program is sponsored jointly by Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Department of Animal Science in the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the New York Cattlemen’s Association, and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Grubb today reminded pesticide applicators to be sure their training is up to date. “Under provisions of the Penn sylvania Pesticide Control Act, all private applicators must have a valid permit to purchase or use restricted-use pesticides,” said Grubb. “To obtain a permit, ap plicants must successfully com plete an examination which adequately demonstrates their knowledge of proper use of restricted pesticides. Applicators must also receive update training at three-year intervals and provide evidence of this training to the Department’s Pesticide Division before they can renew their per mits,” he added.
