A wide center aisle allows the Bixlers plenty of room to
maneuver during milking time.
Well lit and allowing ample room for a feeding cart, Jay Bixler's new dairy facility
shows what can be done with proper planning.

Penn State, Wingenroth said. And
the results have been outstanding.
The chicken house, needless to
say, required extensive
renovations to meet the needs of
the dairy industry. A bulldozer
cleaned out the old concrete floor,
and lowered the surface several
inches. And windows and wall
materials were added, as well as
some insulation.
“But from the inside, you
wouldn’t know it’s not a new
bam,” said Wingenroth.
Part of the savings, he noted,
resulted from the fact that the
facility was built to carefully
drawn specifications, with none of
the on-the-spot negotiations' and
changes that often drive up the
cost of construction.
“We knew exactly what we were
going to do,” said Bixler. “There
were no major changes or add
ons.”
The consulting work, he added,
was well worth the time, effort and
money it cost.
“It’s worth the money just to
know where you’re going,” Bixler
added.
And while part of the function of
the open house is to allow other
dairymen to see the facility, said

“The unique new Tilt-Tub is
today’s answer for the growing
number of farmers and ranchers
using round bales,” says Bob
Granaas, product sales manager.
“It is far more versatile and
economical to use than other round
bale feeding systems. And, it will
handle almost all competitive
round bales, large or small.”
Tub width of the Model BP-20
Bale Processor is seven and one

Bixler, it’s also a way for neigh
bors and friends to see bow the
family is coming along.
About 150 friends, neighbors and
even some strangers, helped clean
up after the fire, Bixler said. And
many, though curious, have stayed
away to give the family time to get
back on its feet.
“This is our way to show them
what we’ve done, and to say
thanks,” he said.

average rate of four to six minutes
each. The design of the Tilt-Tub
uses the bale’s own weight to force
the hay into the processor’s rotor
blades. Changing rotation speed
also permits varied lengths for
different feeding operations.
, The Bale Processor requires 540
rpm and can be operated with as
small as a 60 horsepower tractor.
“After field-testing this product
through three harsh winters, we
have proven its value in wet or
snowy conditions,” Granaas ex
plained. “It has exceptional speed,
reliability and flexibility in
traditional bunk or range feeding
applications.
“It’s so unique,” Granaas added,
“that we expect many uses will be
discovered for it in addition to its
designed applications. It’s a must
for the user of round bales.”
