AlB-Lancast«r Farming, Saturday, Novambar 23,1985 Wayne County DHIA completes record year HONESDALE - The Wayne County Dairy Herd Improvement Association completed 59 years of service to the Wayne County dairy industry with the conclusion of the most recent testing year on Oct. 1. The association finished the year with an annual production of 549 pounds of butterfat and 15,106 pounds of milk per cow, an all-time high milk production level. There were an average of 5411 cows on test for the full year-the highest number of cows on test in the history of Wayne County DHIA. Kevin Burleigh, Pleasant Mount, had the highest production level in the association with 20,503 pounds of milk and 768 pounds of butterfat per cow. Other herds exceeding the 700 pound fat level were KinghiU Farm, Stamicca, 731; and Robert Fielding & Son, Lake Ariel, 704. Herds exceeding the 650 pound fat level were: Rowe Brothers, Honesdale, 693; Charles Dennis, Honesdale, 688; Jack & Ella Chyle, Pleasant Mount, 683; John Worobey, Thompson, 675; Paul Kennedy, Honesdale, 675; Larry R. Gries, Waymart, 674; Robert Fries, Aldenville, 671; Golden Willow Holsteins, Honesdale, 668; James Woodmansee, Lake Como, 665; W.E. Newcomer, Newfoun dland, 664; Jean & Phil Pruss, Lake Ariel, 660. The highest butterfat production as well as milk production in one lactation was achieved by “Tess,” a cow now owned by Randy Howell, Lake Ariel. However she completed most of this record in the herd of her previous owner, James Slocum, Susquehanna. She produced in 305 days 30,625 pounds of milk and 1158 pounds of but terfat. The high lifetime production record was earned by “Quickie,” owned by Rowe Brothers. In her lifetime she produced 201,397 pounds of milk and 9158 pounds of butterfat. The high quality milk award was granted to Michael Nebzydoski, Pleasant Mount. His average yearly somatic cell count was the lowest in the county at 88,000. Outer herds recognized for achieving records be 200,000 were: Michael Nebzydoski, John-Joanne Daniels, James Slocum, Carl Conbeer & Son, Charles P. Dennis, Jr., Edward & Elaine Knehr, Delaware receives duPont grant NEWARD, DE - The College of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Delaware has received a 86,000 grant from E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. in support of the college’s teaching program. According to Dean Donald F. Crossan, the money will be used to provide scholarships to students majoring in th biological sciences in agriculture-plant science, entomology (the study of insects) and animal science. “During the past two years,” explains Crossan, “Du Font’s agricultural chemicals section has been very helpful in arranging visits to our college and the company’s Stine/Haskell laboratories near Newark for high school biology students interested in careers related to agricultural science. It is fitting that this grant be used to help young people study aspects of agricultural science related to the control of plant and animal diseases, insects and Randy L. Newcomer & Son, Stoney Way Farm, Randy Price, Charles P. Dennis, Jr., Little Lakes Farm, Paul Harrison & Sons, Elwin Smith, George Uhl, and William H. Garrett. DHIA supervisors employed hy the assocation are: Joseph Schriefer, Pleasant Mount; Steve Kammer, Hawley; Linda Wagner, Moscow; A. Linford Sampson, Equinunk; and Patricia Hess, Starucca. Dairymen who serve as direc tors for the organization are; LleweUyn Courtright, Lake Ariel; Charles Dennis, Honesdale; Ellis Dix, Pleasant Mount; Paul Ken- 30 Construction is well under way on the 7,700 square-foot building that will house the new Pennsylvania Tobacco auction and should be completed by Nov. 27. The auction, located along Route 340 just east of Intercourse, is scheduled to open Dec. 16. Pennsylvania farmers interested in marketing their Maryland-type 609 tobacco through the auction should call the auction to be placed on the schedule.
