    Hess named PACDD Conservation Farmer
LANCASTER John Hess, a
Director of the Adams County
Conservation District since 1977,
has been named Conservatipn
Farmer of the Year by the Penn
sylvania Association of Con
servation District Directors.
Hess took a poorly drained,
heavily eroded farm and turned it
into an extremely productive one,
using a variety of conservation
practices.
His conservation measures
include 348 acres of conservation
cropping, 102 acres of contour
strips, five acres of waterways,
11,800 feet of terraces, 880 feet of
diversions and six water control
structures.
An active promoter of con
servation, John has hosted
meetings and tours at his farm to

CONSERVATION EXPLORER
POST 100, (Butler County). The
Conservation Explorer Post 100 of
East Butler, PA, provides an
opportunity for youth to explore all
aspects of the conservation
professions and disciplines. In
cooperation with conservation
professionals and organizations,
the Explorer Post offers hands-on
experience for its members. Ac
tivities include fish habitat
provements, an annual browse
cutting program for deer, nesting
box construction for wood ducks,
clearing of hiking trails, and an
annual litter clean-up project. The
Post promotes conservation
education with mall displays,
assistance in the Butler Company
Junior Conservation School, tours
covering soil and water con
servation, forestry management,
water safety, deer herd
management, and state fish
hatchery facilities.
CONSERVATIONIST OF THE
YEAR-M. DICE STATLER
(Franklin County). Dice Statler of
Chambersburg, PA, has been
carrying out innovative con
servation techniques for the past 40
years and has been sharing these
ideas effectively with other far
mers. A founding member of the
Franklin Co. Conservation
District, Mr. Statler was one of the
first farmers in his area to install a
diversion and to go to zero grazing
program for his dairy operation. In
the 1970’5, he did not plant "fen
cerow to fencerow" but instead
established field borders around
his crops. Through his associations
with local farm businesses, the
bank, farm cooperatives, and
other organizations, Mr Statler
sees how businesses and farming
can better work together. Many

CONSERVATION EDUCATOR
GLENN H. LUCKENBILL
(Schuylkill County). Mr.
Luckenbill is involved in many
aspects of Schuylkill County’s
conservation education programs.
First, he developed and im
plemented an environmental ed
course into the life sciences of the
Blue Mountain Middle School.
Second, he provides services to
many community and govern
mental conservation agencies as
an IU workshop coordinator,
Project Wild Workshop coor
dinator, wildlife survey conductor,
and member of the NE RC&D Env.

program while he served as an
Associate Director. He par
ticipates in workshops on forestry,
acid rain, aquatic biology, winter
activities, and urban en
vironmental education, and he

the PACDD, PA Science Teachers
Assoc., Pa. Alliance for Env.
Education, and the PA YCC.
