Stamy, BY WENDY WEHR CARLISLE A pair of four year-olds captured the judge’s attention during the Southcentral Pennsylvania Holstein Cham pionship Show, held August 10 at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. Two junior exhibitors showed their four-year-old entries to the show championships. John F. Stamy IV claimed the senior and grand championships with his Manor-Grove Beatnik Mehsse, while C.E. Hubbard 111 accepted the reserve titles for his Kowraygan Creek Linnan Jean. But the judge’s choice between the pair did not come easily. As he pulled them into first and second place in an exceptionally nice class of four-year-olds, judge Donald Seipt, of Keystone Farm, Easton, noted the tightness of the placings. “If I owned them, from day to day I’d probably switch them around,” commented Seipt following the show. But he called them as he saw them on show day, which left Stamy’s Royal-Haven Elevation Beatnik daughter in the top spot. The fine four-year-old also received the best-bred-and-owned title and the award for best udder of show. Stamy, a Mechanicsburg native, has shown Melisse in 4-H and junior shows, where she has placed consistently at the top of her class. In 4-H competition at Ship pensburg this year, she was also grand champion. An honorable mention winner in the All-Pennsylvania contest as a junior two-year-old, Melisse is also a healthy producer, giving 95 pounds on her last two tests. She is scored VG-87, but Stamy noted that she’s been dry both times she’s been classified. As the reserve grand champion, Hubbard’s Creek Bluff Elevation Lester daughter also has many show awards to her credit, in cluding last year’s southcentral Holstein championship title. Just a few week’s ago she repeated as grand champion at the York Holstein Show. The Ex-90 Jean was a Pennsylvania winner and has a 20,000 pound milk record. She was bred by Hagan, Mikown, and Seidel. In the run for the premier breeder and premier exhibitor banners, Le-Ida Farms of Newville earned the honors. Leroy, Ida, and Edgar Showaker, of Le-Ida, were pleased to claim the banners for the second year in a row. Enjoying show competition, the Showakers have won the premier awards five years in a row at the Shippensburg Fair. “We breed show cows; we’re not '.r % .v % Manor-Grove Beatnik Meiisse, shown by John Stamy IV, was named grand champion of the Southcentral Pennsylvania Holstein Championship Show. Hubbard claim Southcentral Holstein championships into the numbers,” remarked Edgar following the presentation of the awards. The Showakers milk 80 cows and have a 17,300 pound milk and 640 pound fat herd average. The junior champions of the southcentral show were shown by Dale Hostetter, of Lebanon County, and Robert Gitt, Lit tlestown. Hostetter’s home-bred Dale- Pride Val Favorite-ET was the top summer yearling and went on to receive Seipt’s nod for the junior championship. She is an S-W-D Valiant daughter. Robert Gitt’s first-place in termediate yearling heifer earned the reserve junior championship. Penn Gate Sky Star Dawn, also a home-bred entry, is sired by Penn Gate Wallie Sky Star. In the bull classes, Cindy Showaker showed Le-Ida Val Mr. Nate, a Valiant son, to the championship. Paul and Sharon Fox’s Golden Circle Touch of Class, a junior yearling, received the reserve champion title. Champions were also named in junior competition during the show. The senior and grand championships went, of course, to Stamy and Hubbard with their four-year-olds. The junior champion in youth competition was shpwn by Kynel Bomgardner, showing a junior yearling heifer, and Becky Dyarmen, with her senior yearling, Dyar-Acres Lorna Quality, took the reserve junior championship. On hand to present ribbons and awards throughout the day were five county dairy princesses from the southcentral area, including: Debby Hawbaker, Franklin; Lorie Jamison, Cumberland; Joyce Ruppert, East Berlin; Jennie Hess, Adams; and Beth Anne Rice, Perry.
