York Fair Sept. 10-14 gelding with a black mane and tail, and have a white blaze on the face and four white stockings. And because the team works before millions of adults and excited children each year, each horse must have a gentle temperament. Each horse weighs about 2,000 pounds, and is fitted with hor seshoes that are 20 inches long from end to end and weigh about five pounds each-about twice as long as the shoe worn by a riding horse. (A horse’s hoof is made of a nerveless, hornlike substance similar to a fingernail. Shoeing a Clydesdale is no more painful to a horse than a manicure is to a person.) On an average day, each hitch horse will consume 30 gallons of water, 25 to 30 quarts of feed, and 50 to 60 pounds of hay. The brewers immediately put the team to work pulling their beer wagons, and today, the Clydesdales are synonymous with Anheusei 1 Busch and Budweiser. Black and white Dalmations have been constant companions to the horses since the 19505, originally serving as watchdogs over the horses and wagons along the delivery routes. Now, the dogs ride along in parades atop the red wagons. The Clydesdale appearances are sponsored by Brewery Products Co. of York. The York Interstate Fair runs Sept. 6-14.
