WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection for 16 new varieties of beans, mudagrass, cauliflower, celery, peas, soybeans and tomatoes. Also, a certificate of protection is being reissued for a variety of safflower. Kenneth H. Evans, an official with USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, said developers of the newly protected varieties have the exclusive right to reproduce their products in the United States for 18 years. Cer tificates of protection are granted after review of the breeder’s' records and claims that each new variety is novel, uniform and stable.
