Angus: Winning was a family affair at the Eastern Regional BY JACKHUBLEY YORK Susan Moxley came to York from West Friendship, Md., last Saturday to compete with junior exhibitors from 12 eastern states in the Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show. But by the end of the heifer show, it was apparent that her toughest competition had come from the same farm. Susan, 21, and her brother Mark 16, proved to be an unbeatable family team as they paraded a pair of Dawn Acres Angus heifers to grand champion and reserve honors in the American Angus Association’s largest junior event east of the Mississippi. For his grand champion in the owned division, judge Greg Krueger slapped HF Duchess 451, a May 4, Winchester daughter, and also the show’s intermediate champion. The fancy female was used to the limelight, after being named national calf champion in Denver this January. And at reserve was Summitcrest Chair Lady, an April 24 daughter of Greenbrae Chairman, whose maternal sister had topped the same show last year in Virginia. Though Susan and Mark had split champion and reserve honors on other occasions, this was the first time they had ever placed number one and two at the regional level. Was brother Mark upset about giving up the top spot to his “big sister’s” entry? “If I were judging I’d pick her, too,” he smiled. In the bred-and-owned heifer competition, it was spntely Cathy Shive of Seven Valleys, York ‘" Grand champion bred-and-owned heifer was exhibited by Cathy Shive, Seven Valleys, Pa. SLH Bo Jangles captured grand champion steer honors for exhibitor Sarah Lynn Hill of Foresi, Va. County, who waltzed her April 16 heifer, BV Elba 416, to the championship. A Pine Drive Big Sky daughter, Cathy’s heifer, nicknamed Beauty, was champion female at this year’s York Preview Show. Cathy’s parents, Gordon and Diane Shive, have 30 brood cows on their Seven Valleys farm, and are particularly proud of Beauty’s dam, Rally Elba, pur chased from Rally Farms, Millbrook, NY. “This is her third calf, and all three have been champions,” says Gordon. At reserve in the bred-and owned division was South Branch Ms Burgess, an April 2, Pine Drive daughter shown by Timothy Kinsley, of York. Virginian Sarah Lynn Hill found herself in the winner’s circle when her 1,310-pound steer named SLH Bo Jangles was named grand champion. Sired by Progression, the steer’s dam was South Fork Enchantres, a Briar Hill JJ daughter, and the fifth generation owned by Sarah’s father Paul Hill, manager of Northcote Farm, Forest, Va. “I feel real good,” said Miss Hill after showing her first champion. “I work with him every day,” she added, “just to let him get to know me. He’s real gentle.” Bo Jangles’ next stop will be the National Junior Angus Show in Tulsa, Okla., this month. The reserve champion steer was an 1,170-pound son of Pine Drive Big Sky shown by Sheryl Bennett of Woodbine, Md. Wimberly, Branchville, S.C. In the cow-calf show, Stacie Wiesenbaugh of Hagerstown, Md., took top honors with RFF Miss Pride, a March 1981 daughter of Sir Wms Rock FF, with a Premier Independence heifer calf at side. The group-of-five-head com petition saw Maryland Junior Angus Association emerge vic torious, followed by Georgia in second place and Pennsylvania placing third. This year’s Eastern Regional attracted 203 entrants, making the show second in size to the National Junior Angus Show. According to Mark Wyble, director of junior activities for the American Angus Association, the Eastern Regional is the largest of the two regional junior events sponsored annually by the Association. York County has not hosted the show since 1979, and next year’s Eastern Regional will journey south to Culman, Ala.
