Spray additives fact sheet NEWARK, De. - With today’s sophisticated, multi-use pesticides, spray ad ditives have come into widespread use. They enhance the activity of many agricultural chemicals, making them more efficient. Choosing which ad ditive to use, and when, can be confusing, given all the surfactants, compatibility agents, stickers, penetrants and anti-drift agents on the market today. To help farmers decide, University of Delaware extension weed specialist Frank Webb has prepared a four-page fact sheet which describes the functions of different additives. It goes into considerable detail on the most commonly used types-wetting agents (nonionic, anionic and catiomc), compatibility agents, penetrating adjuvants (water- and oil-based), spreader-stickers, buf fering agents, anti-drift agents and spreader binders. Webb discusses the purpose of each material, tells how it works and when it should be used to im prove pesticide per formance. He also tells when NOT to use certain materials because of potential management or production problems. For a copy of this practical guide, Delaware farmers are encouraged to contact the county extension office.
