MINNEAPOLIS, - The hor
mone calcitriol, the final active
form of vitamin D, is necessary to
maintain normal calcium
metabolism in poultry, according
to Dr. Joseph H. Soares Jr.,

the University of Maryland.

industry representatives at the
33rd Annual Pfizer Research
Conference here, Dr. Soares said,
“Even though calcitnol is required
for poultry to metabolize calcium,
if hens are fed only this hormone
form of vitamin D for several
weeks they will not demonstrate
normal egg hatchability.
Therefore, the vitamin D deficient
egg will cause abnormal
calcification and development of
the embryonic beak which, in turn,
seems to be caused by inadequate
transfer of calcitriol to the egg.”

hens produce high levels of the
hormone during periods of shell
calcification. Experiments show
that there is a direct correlation
between calcitnol concentrations
in hens and the thickness of the egg
shells they produce. Hens that are
too young or too old to produce
eggs or are not laying have lower
concentrations of calcitnol than
hens in active lay.
Administration of estradiol and
other sex hormones stimulate the
kidney enzyme responsible for the
last step in the synthesis of
calcitnol.
