Soares Jr., professor of nutrition in the department of poultry science at the University of Maryland. Speaking to more than scientists, nutritionists and procurement and processing, Norbest, Inc., Salt Lake City, Utah; • Yvonne Vizzier, vice president, Marshall Durbin Co., Jackson, Miss.; • William D. Waters, president, Stillwaters Farm, Palmyra, N.C.; and • Dr. George D. Wilson, vice president for scientific affairs, Coleitriol and poultry industry representatives at the 33rd Annual Pfizer Research Conference here, Dr. Soares said, “Even though calcitnol is required for poultry to metabolize calcium, if hens are fed only this hormone form of vitamin D for several weeks they will not demonstrate normal egg hatchability. Therefore, the vitamin D deficient egg will cause abnormal calcification and development of the embryonic beak which, in turn, seems to be caused by inadequate transfer of calcitriol to the egg.” 600 feed Dr. Soares’ research shows that JUNE National Dairy Fanners Month A Proud Part Of Our Farming Heritage H High Quality, All Electric Infrared Heaters Unbreakable Metal Heating Elements (No Glass Tubes to Break) Modu-Ray Heaters Save Energy J * Variety of Models to Choose From K4Gl®' ELECTRONICS CO., INC. Experiments show that there is a direct correlation between calcitnol concentrations in hens and the thickness of the egg shells they produce. Hens that are too young or too old to produce eggs or are not laying have lower concentrations of calcitnol than hens in active lay. Administration of estradiol and other sex hormones stimulate the kidney enzyme responsible for the last step in the synthesis of calcitnol. u&im mmsx. “Your Local, Independent Bank” Save Losses with Protect your investment at low cost Warns against power failure, fan failure, fire, theft, critical tempera tures, etc MM Also Kaiglo Alarm Systems FREE LITERATURE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST Telephone (215) 837-0700
