Holstein group honored WASHINGTON - The House Agriculture Committee has unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Holstein-Friesian Association of America. The resolution was sponsored by Chairman Kika de la Garza, I> Tex., and Rep. Edward R. Madigan, R-lU., Ranking Minority Member of the Committee. The resolution notes that the association, including more than 44,000 breeders of purebred, registered Holstein dairy cattle was organized on May 25, 1885. U.S. Holsteins, which produce more than 90 percent of the nation’s milk supply, are recognized worldwide as superior breeding stock. The resolution, which will now be forwarded to the House, expresses the sense of the House that “recognition be extended to the Holstein-Friesian Association of America for its most noteworthy contribution to the great American agricultural revolution and ... its contribution to the genetic ad vancement and the efficiency of the national dairy herd.” Scaling named SCS chief WASHINGTON - Secretary of Agriculture John R. Block has appointed Texas rancher Wilson Scaling to be chief of the Soil Conservation Service (SCS). Scaling will be the eighth SCS chief in the agency’s 50-year history. He replaces Peter C. Myers who has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as assistant secretary of agriculture for natural resources and en vironment. “Like Peter Myers before him, Wilson Scaling will bring the perspective of the agricultural community to the office of the chief of the Soil Conservation Service,” said Block. “Wilson is an active conservationist and a leader in the agricultural community.” Scaling, 46, is general manager for the family ranching operation, which dates back to the early 1880 s, in north-central Texas. The ranch is a cow-calf and yearling operation.
