for a banquet in honor of Dr.
James R. Miller, chairman of the
University of Maryland’s
Department of Agronomy since
1963. The banquet will be held
Sunday, June 9 at the university’s
Adult Education Center with a
reception at 4 p.m., followed by
dinner at 5 p.m. Banquet reser
vations will be limited to 500
guests.
Miller attended Washington
College for three years before

Banquet to honor retiring Ag Department Chairman
Maryland, where he earned his
8.5., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in
soils, with a minor in plant
physiology.
Following graduation, Miller
accepted a position as a soil
scientist with the U.S. Department
of Agriculture in BeltsviUe. While
there, he conducted research on
radioactive fallout in soils. He also
conducted extensive research on
methods of determining available
phosphorus in soils.
In 1958, he joined the staff of the
Agronomy Department at the
university where he was in charge

laboratory. Through his Extension
work in soils, lime and fertilizer,
Miller became well-known
throughout Maryland, par
ticipating in many meetings and
speaking widely on soils and the
use of lime and fertilizer.
He organized and participated in
many regional lime and fertilizer
educational meetings for industry
and professional agricultural,
personnel. Miller also assisted in
the development of agronomy
short courses at College Park.

YORK The York County
Conservation District is
establishing a no-till drill
promotion program m the County.
The purpose of this program is to
encourage the use of conservation
tillage to save soil, soil moisture,
and tillage costs for farmers.
The District’s goal is to provide
access to a no-till drill for in
terested farmers so they may use
the drill on their farm, in their
individual soil conditions.
