COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Reservations are being accepted for a banquet in honor of Dr. James R. Miller, chairman of the University of Maryland’s Department of Agronomy since 1963. The banquet will be held Sunday, June 9 at the university’s Adult Education Center with a reception at 4 p.m., followed by dinner at 5 p.m. Banquet reser vations will be limited to 500 guests. Following graduation, Miller accepted a position as a soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in BeltsviUe. While there, he conducted research on radioactive fallout in soils. He also conducted extensive research on methods of determining available phosphorus in soils. Through his Extension work in soils, lime and fertilizer, Miller became well-known throughout Maryland, par ticipating in many meetings and speaking widely on soils and the use of lime and fertilizer. He organized and participated in many regional lime and fertilizer educational meetings for industry and professional agricultural, personnel. The purpose of this program is to encourage the use of conservation tillage to save soil, soil moisture, and tillage costs for farmers. The District’s goal is to provide access to a no-till drill for in terested farmers so they may use the drill on their farm, in their individual soil conditions.
