And timely, too.. With alfalfa seedlings gasping for breath, and corn just waiting in the desert-dry upper soil for the starting gun of moisture, it was truly a perfect piece of weather. Weathermen would explain that it had something to do with low pressure systems ahead of a cold front, and moisture gathered by the system and brought in from the ocean. In this neighborhood we know better. That fantastic ram was generated by a bit of hocus-pocus from Aunt Mabel. When we stopped by Aunt Mabel’s recently while moving planting equipment, she was headed down around the pond to retrieve the remnants of a watersnake spotted while mowing grass. Purpose wasn’t just to dispose of the deceased reptile’s remains, but to hang it in a tree. Hang it in a tree? Yep. Seems that hanging a dead snake in a tree will bring on ram. Why? No one seemed to know why. But it seems there’s this old time claim that it would work. With soil conditions drier than a Death Valley rock, and dust hanging like thick fog wherever any farmer tried to work a piece of ground, who were we to argue. All we wanted - all we desperately needed - was water. From wherever. Needless to say, as the welcome Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, May 11,1985-B5 H Hr downpour was pounding on the tin roof a couple of days later, a phone call came from Uncle Clyde, just checking to see if we were happy with the weather. I told him to thank Aunt Mabel. And he backed up her results with a further story. Seems the couple was visiting on Eastern Shore some tune ago, when similar drought conditions were withering tempers and farm crops. A local farmer with whom they were staying lamented the par ched weather and just how badly the area needed rain. Driving through a wooded section a bit later, the couple spotted on the road the carcass of a snake that had been run over by an automobile. Aunt Mabel retrieved it and hung it in a tree nearby. Returning to their host, they assured the farmer he could count on ram in just a little while. By Monday evening, it started to rain. And it rained again on Tuesday. On Wednesday. And yet again on Thursday. By Friday, the farmer host was warning his guest that she’d better truck on out to that tree and remove the snake so it would dry off a bit. No one - but no one - can enlighten us on where this snake tale superstition began. Anyone out there have any idea? Whatever. If it works, I say hang onto that snake Aunt Mabel. And hang it up about once a week for the rest of the summer.
