in PSU dairy judging contest UNIVERSITY PARK - Nearly 250 .high school and university students from all parts of Penn sylvania competed for honors last week in Penn State’s dairy judging contest. . _ _ The contest for 4-H and FFA teams and Penn State students was the opening event in the 60th an nual Dairy Exposition, a series of contests and demonstrations that will conclude with Showday in the Ag Arena on April 27. Contestants in the judging contest placed several types of dairy cattle mto classes based on physical characteristics. Penn State alumni with an in terest in dairy served as judges for place classes and scored “oral reasons,” which are presentations detailing why cattle are placed in specific classes. Winners in the 4-H Division • The Lancaster County 4-H team (Donald Welk, Bob Barley and Tom Barley) was the overall 4- H winner. The team also captured first place for oral reasons. • The Lebanon “A” team (Dale Balmer, Mike Kunkle, Nelson Bangardin and Matt Hatnch) placed second m overall com petition. • The Potter County 4-H team (Jeff Pemmg, Ken Smoker, Don Gilliland and Leo Cornell) placed second for oral reasons. • Donald Welk, of the Lancaster County 4-H team, won highest individual honors for both placing and oral “reasons.” Winners in the FFA Competition • The Solanco High School “A” team of Quarryville (Joe Delong, Kris Ebenshade, Dave Mull and Tom Wiker) took first place honors in the overall competition and in “oral reasons.” • Tulpehocken High School FFA (Troy Koenig, Dons and Gary Bicksler) captured second place overall. • The Cloister High School “A” team (Dave Eby, John Fox, Jim Zimmerman and John Gerhart) took second in “oral reasons.” • Joe Delong, of the Solanco High School team, captured overall winner and first in the FFA division. Professional Collegiate Division Winners • Mike L. Fair, a junior majoring in agriculture from Lebanon, placed first in overall competition. • Lisa A. Francisco, a freshman in the Division of Undergraduate Studies from Lafayette, New Jersey, placed second. • Claudia Lynn Rowe, a junior majoring in agriculture from Gilbertsville, New York, placed first in “oral reasons.” • William W. Lesher, a freshman majoring in agricultural business from Bemville, captured second in oral reasons. Amateur Collegiate Division Winners * Brent ' Rou McMtllen, a sophomore majoring in' engineering from Loysville, placed first. • Louise M. Moir, a senior majoring in food science from Penn State College captured second place. The Dairy Expo is sponsored each year by the Dairy Science Club in the College of Agriculture at Penn State. The public is invited to attend Showday events on April 27from 9:00 to 4:00 in the Ag Arena on Park Street Extension opposite Beaver Stadium.
