The effect created is soft pastel colors showing through the outer fabric layer. Floral designs are particularly suited to this craft, but equally interesting are geometric and Art Deco patterns. To begin a project, select a preprinted embroidery pattern printed on 100 percent muslin fabric and an additional piece of muslin of the same dimensions. The second piece (imprinted) will be the finished side of your design. Place the unprinted piece of fabric on a smooth surface with the printed piece on top. Working on the printed side, insert the needle and begin outlining with a very small running stitch (eight to 10 stitches per inch).. Stitch around the entire design, making sure to catch the bottom (unprinted) side of the fabric. The bottom piece will be the front of your finished work. To add the yarn filler between the fabric, start with a double strand of 4-ply yarn. Insert the needle from the printed side between the fabric layers, taking care not to go through the bottom layer of material. Work the needle and yarn through the layers and bring the needle through just one side of the design area. Pull both strands of the yarn through the design until the ends are flush and cut off even with the fabric. With your fingernail, stretch the yarn ends and pull the fabric until the yarn disappears between the layers. Repeat this after every pass of the yarn. Continue until the entire design has been filled. If an area is not full enough, use a single stand and repeat the yarning technique.
