BZO-Uncatter Farming, Saturday, March 16,1985 Notebook Ida Risser My trip to Hawaii was a definite change from my work routine at home. But, because we were almost constantly on the move, I wouldn’t call it a vacation. In fact, we were required to get up earlier than we usually do at home. Most mornings we were up by 5 a.m. When we visited Pearl Harbor, which is about five mile northwest of Honolulu, we arrived at 7:30 a.m. only to find hundreds of people already in line. About 5,000 people visit each day. After touring their museum and viewing a film of the bombing on Dec. 7, 1941 by the Japanese, we took a boat, manned by an all girl crew, out to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. Oil slicks from the sunken ship can still be seen and the names of the 1,177 men who lost their lives were inscribed on an end wall. It was a moving experience. After a bus tour of the city and the Punchbowl Memorial Cemetery, we spent a little time sun bathing and swimming near Waikiki Beach. In the evening we attended a Polynesian Revue. The exotic dancers were dressed in colorful native costumes and the drums and musical instruments were loud. Afterward, we had a buffet meal and shopped in the In ternational Market. Here hundreds of shops are crowded into a rain forest atmosphere swarming with tourists. Shopping seemed to be the favorite pastime of many people on our tour and this was a good place to spend money as the fascinating shops carried exquisite jewelry, handmade island crafts and the comfortable muumuus and aloha shirts. The flights from one island to another took only about 20 minutes. When we landed on the valley isle of Maui, we took a bus to a tropical plantation where a tram carried us through fields of coffee, avacados, guavo and macadamia nut trees. The rainfall varies from almost 400 inches on the mountain tops to only five inches along the beaches. Several times we saw snow on their 14,000 feet mountains which are of volcanic origin. As I’d enjoyed the coconut syrup on my pancakes in the morning, I bought a small jug to take home to my husband and I also ordered a case of fresh pineapples to be shipped to the Philadelphia Air port.
