Professor R. David Smith of Cornell University led a lively discussion on improving management of the reproduction process to increase profit. Berks course for young workers LEESPORT - Farm employers and parents of young farm em ployees should insist that youth working on farms this summer have proper training and cer tification. The child labor provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, man date that youth under 17 years of age cannot be employed in certain agricultural operations unless they have had special training and received certification. While the provisions do not apply to youth working on farms of their parents or guardians, the training is still essential for all young farm workers. The Berks County Cooperative Extension Service will offer an agricultural equipment safety and certification course to teach 13 to 16 year old youths about normal working hazards involved with tractors and other farm machinery. Certificates of com pletion will be issued upon sue- WS4* cessful completion of the course. The course will involve classroom training and operation of tractors and farm equipment. The course will begin on Wed nesday, March 20, 1985, and will run for four consecutive Wed nesdays. The first two classes (March 20 & 27) will be at tne Berks County Agricultural Center, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The second two (April 3 & 10) will be held at Shartlesville Farm Service, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The final testing will be held on Saturday, April 13, 1985 8:00 a.m. at Shartlesville Farm Service. Course instructors will be Christine Williams, Kutztown, Vo- Ag Dept, and Lynn Van Tassel, Hamburg Area Vo-Ag Depart ment.
