Pennfield Plans High-Tech
LANCASTER - A prototype
feed mill, unlike any other in
operation or under construction, is
being planned by Pennfield Cor
poration in the Mount Joy In
dustrial Park.
The largest feed manufacturer
based m Pennsylvania, Pennfield
expects to spend $6.4 million on the
plant, which will have the capacity
to produce 60 tons of feed per hour.
“It’s more than a feed mill,”
said Pennfield president Ernest 0.
Horn Jr. “It will be prototype for
the feed milling industry. Its
unique design will incorporate the
most current technology, and its
equipment and control system will
be engineered to readily accept
improvements in the technology of
feed formulation immediately as
they become available.”
The 28,000-square-foot “general
line” mill will produce complete
and concentrate hog and dairy
rations, the company said, though
the product mix could be changed
at any time.
The technological innovations
are the result of a cooperative
arrangement between Pennfield
and the plant’s builders, Sprout-
Waldron Division, Koppers Co.,
Inc., of Muncy, Pa. Company of
ficials expect to have the plant in
operation by October of 1986.

Sale of animal and poultry feeds
account for about half of the firm’s
annual sales, which last year
exceeded $l5O million. The firm
serves a variety of customers

The company’s Hempfield
operation, which currently
produces poultry feed, opened in
1976 and was considered at that
time to have the best technology
available. It is capable of
producing 80 tons of feed per hour.
Pennfield was formed in 1971
from the merger of Miller &
Bushong, Inc. of Rohrerstown, and
D.E. Horn and Co., Inc., of„York.
In 1982, the company bought out
the Pennfield stock held by the
Graybill family, and Horn
assumed the presidency of the
firm.
A privately held company,
Pennfield also owns and operates
Pennfield Farms Egg Division in
Ephrata, Pennfield Farms Poultry
Meat Division in Fredericksburg,
and the Beachley-Hardy Seed
Company in Camp Hill.
Pennfield, which is based in
nearby Rohrerstown, will seek
