A2B-UncMt«r Farming, Saturday, February 16,1985 Pennfield Plans High-Tech LANCASTER - A prototype feed mill, unlike any other in operation or under construction, is being planned by Pennfield Cor poration in the Mount Joy In dustrial Park. The largest feed manufacturer based m Pennsylvania, Pennfield expects to spend $6.4 million on the plant, which will have the capacity to produce 60 tons of feed per hour. “It’s more than a feed mill,” said Pennfield president Ernest 0. Horn Jr. “It will be prototype for the feed milling industry. Its unique design will incorporate the most current technology, and its equipment and control system will be engineered to readily accept improvements in the technology of feed formulation immediately as they become available.” The 28,000-square-foot “general line” mill will produce complete and concentrate hog and dairy rations, the company said, though the product mix could be changed at any time. The technological innovations are the result of a cooperative arrangement between Pennfield and the plant’s builders, Sprout- Waldron Division, Koppers Co., Inc., of Muncy, Pa. Company of ficials expect to have the plant in operation by October of 1986. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to boost Pennfteld’s Delmarva Dairy Day to feature PSU specialists NEWARK, Del. - This year’s Delmarva Dairy Day will be held February 27, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Hartly Fire Hall. The morning speaker will be Steve Spencer from Pennsylvania State University. He will discuss what’s new in milking equipment. Spencer is an extension specialist in milking machinery and for merly chaired the American Dairy Science Association’s committee for the approval of milking machines. In the afternoon another Penn State specialist, extension dairy nutritionist Dick Adams will show It’s Pork Congress time HARRISBURG - For Pa. pork producers, all roads will lead to Harrisburg’s Penn Hams Motor Inn on Thursday, Feb. 21, for the seventh annual Keystone Pork Congress. The firm serves a variety of customers within a 125-mile radius of Lan caster. The company’s Hempfield operation, which currently produces poultry feed, opened in 1976 and was considered at that time to have the best technology available. It is capable of producing 80 tons of feed per hour. Pennfield was formed in 1971 from the merger of Miller & Bushong, Inc. of Rohrerstown, and D.E. Horn and Co., Inc., of„York. In 1982, the company bought out the Pennfield stock held by the Graybill family, and Horn assumed the presidency of the firm. A privately held company, Pennfield also owns and operates Pennfield Farms Egg Division in Ephrata, Pennfield Farms Poultry Meat Division in Fredericksburg, and the Beachley-Hardy Seed Company in Camp Hill. Pennfield, which is based in nearby Rohrerstown, will seek financing through the Lancaster Industrial Development Authority, according to Ken Greenwood, manager of feed production. farmers how to use forage test results to balance feed rations.
