Kermit Birth retired Jan. 1 as
professor emeritus of Agricultural
Economics Extension at Penn
State University. After 36 years as
a poultry and egg marketing
specialist, Birth plans to stay
active and continue to write ar
ticles for the industry. “My most
frustrating experience during
retirement will be what not to do,”
Birth says.
During his career, Birth has
developed and conducted
numerous educational programs
for poultry producers,
wholesalers, retailers and con
sumers. He has studied the
marketing of eggs and poultry
products with an emphasis on
improving quality, such as
reducing shell damage. Birth has
been instrumental in developing a
classification system for iden
tifying causes of egg shell damage.
He has also assisted in
developing a computerized broiler

He said pre-measurement is
important in helping farmers plan
the amount of land to devote to the
acreage conservation reserve
(ACR) and planted acreages of the
program crops. The ACR is
cropland removed from production
and put into conserving uses under
the 1985 acreage reduction
programs. The programs require
farmers to reduce their 1985 feed
grain and extra long staple cotton
acres by 10 percent; wheat and
upland cotton by 30 percent; and
