Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser Every now and then I like to reflect on the life-style of my great grandparents who lived on a farm in easier Lancaster County. I’ve been told that in the mid 1800’s their general farm resembled a tiny villege with several tenant houses, a blacksmith shop, a cooper, a wagon and com crib shed, a pig sty, a summerhouse with a bake oven, a springhouse in addition to the large bank barn and a huge brick house. * Big CASH Discounts Plus 9.7% or MARSHALL MACHINERY PETERMAN FARM EQUIP. My grand mother had a beautiful arrangement of peacock feathers hung in her bedroom and I remember admiring them as a child. My great grandfather crossed the ocean seven times to visit relatives in Germany. He must have been an unusual man as he decided one year to put a glass roof on his bam. Later it had to be removed as it was too heavy and it got too hot in the bam. I still have some of the ridged yellow, blue, green and amber glass that was used. It is also said that he had bad luck because his bam burned twice. One time the hired girl accidentlly dropped a candle in the hay while hunting the eggs. When he was coming home from Lan caster, he was informed of the fire and he immediately turned his team around and drove back to town for a load of lumber to rebuild.
