012-Uacntor Fanning Saturday January 19,1985 Power and grace mark draft horse show BY JACK HUBLEY HARRISBURG Though most visitors to the Farm Show find it difficult to thread their way through the human traffic jam, the show’s massive draft horses seem to have little difficulty. Hearing the approach of giant hooves, the sea of Farm Show spectators parted quickly as the tremendous Belgians, Percherons and Clydesdales made their way to the large arena for Monday’s show. Judging this year’s Clydesdale Show was Ron Bast, of Richfield, Mountain Echo Molly, owned by Lewis and Gail Biddle, Boalesburg, was grand champion Belgian mare. Jim and Dail Corl also exhibited the grand champion Clydesdale stallion, an ex-Budweiser giant named Bardrill Jim Corl of State College and his grand champion Clydesdale mare, Bratlach Blossom. Mary and Abraham Allebach stand with their grand champion Percheron mare, Beth Mill. Wisconsin, who bestowed grand champion stallion and mare honors on horses owned by James and Dail Corl of State College, Centre County. The show’s grand champion stallion was Bardrill Ambassador, a giant of his breed, standing 18.3 h high. The Corls purchased their top stallion from the Budweiser breeding farm in 1983. The family first saw Am bassador at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1979, home of North America’s biggest Clydesdale show. “That’s where he made his impression on me,” noted Mrs. Corl, adding, “Boy, are they (Budweiser) ever sorry they sold him now.” Making her debut on the Clydesdale show circuit was Bratlach Blossom, the Farm Show’s grand champion mare. Both Ambassador and Blossom were originally imported from Scotland. The Corls also exhibited the reserve champion stallion, Olde Pine Tree Donegal, giving up the reserve champion mare position to Double A Contessa, owned by Abraham and Mary Allebach of Spring Mills, also in Centre County. The nine-year-old Contessa had been named champion mare at the Keystone in November. “Most horses don’t look that good at nine,” noted Mrs. Allebach proudly, “but she’s really carrying herself well.” In the Percheron Show the tables were turned, as horses owned by the Allebachs were named grand and reserve champion mares, and grand champion stallion. Champion stallion was Sask valley Chief, a two-year-old bought as a foul in Canada. “He was the one we were counting on,” said the Allebach’s son, Gerald. Chief had also been named champion at Keystone, as well as reserve champion at the New York State Fair. The Allebach’s champion Percheron mare, a dapple-gray named Beth Mill, is a five-year-old that Mrs. Allebach had picked from a pasture of horses in Ohio owned by Jim Westbrook. “At first he said, ‘No, you can’t have her,’” said Mrs. Allebach, recalling the family’s transaction with Westbrook. “But later he called back and traded her for some of our Holstein heifers.” Mrs. Allebach declined to reveal how many heifers it takes to equal a single Percheron champion. Judge Ron Bast also chose an Allebach Percheron as his reserve mare, naming Windermere’s Roxanne, a yearling that had taken grand champion honors at the New York State Fair, and first in her class at the prestigious Canadian Royal. Reserve champion stallion honors went to Circle C Magnum, owned by Gilbert Corl of State College. Judging the large Belgian Show was Paul Loyer of Kreidersville, Ohio, who found his champion stallion mare among the entries fielded by Lewis and Gail Biddle and family of Boalesburg in Centre County. The seven-year-old, named Mountain Echo Molly, was the reserve champion at both the 1983 and 84 Farm Shows, and took the same title at last year’s Keystone. “She’s been the mare that we’ve done most of our farm work with,” noted Mrs. Biddle, adding that Molly keeps getting better with age. “She was the first horse that we bought, and she’s really part of the family,” Mrs. Biddle concluded. The reserve champion mare was Bloom’s Conquerors Jan, shown by Herbert J. Frantz of Waynesboro. In the stallion competition, C&C Lemley Orndorff, of Waynesburg, took top honors with their grand champion, Orndorff’s Congolaise Supreme, also named the senior champion.
