A 3S- Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 5,1! FULLBLOOD SALERS (Continued from Page A 27) bull at last year’s 10th annual National Salers Show in Des Moines. He now has three half blood Salers-Angus calves on the ground with a fourth on the way. Even if fullblood Salers are still out of reach for most cattlemen, Dr. Clair says that anyone in terested in the breed can get in on the ground floor by buying an embryo, which can be purchased for about $5,000, according to Clair. And for those interested in semen, Lyn-Lee Farms will be offering straws of Keystone’s semen at, “a very reasonable price this spring just to get some of his calves on the ground,” announces Dr. Clair. “This will help people to realize the value of the breed in the U.S. If they’ll just try Salers, they’ll have smaller calves at birth, larger calves at weaning, and a better carcass,” he concludes. And if the doctor’s prognosis proves correct, Keystone and his small State College harem may have plenty of company throughout the state in years to come. Dairymen invited to Johne’s meeting QUARRYVILLE - The Solanco Young Farmers will host a meeting on Johne’s disease on January 15. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the ag classroom at Solanco High School. Dr. Robert Whitlock, New Bolton Center, will serve as the resource person. Dr. Whitlock is currently involved with research on Penn sylvania dairy herds with Johne’s disease. Johne’s is a disease that should be a concern of all Solanco area dairy farmers. The clinical disease is characterized by severe scouring and rapid loss of weight terminating in emaciation and death. Young animals are highly susceptible to the disease.
