But what would you call a canine that is a loyal companion but can also do a full day’s work for you? “Indispensible” is the term used by ,Jim and Virginia Shearer of Mountville, Lan caster County, to describe their experiences with border collies and the sheep industry. The border collie is well known for its exploits in other areas of the world such as Scotland and Australia, but hasn’t enjoyed widespread notoriety in Pennsylvania until recently. "I use ad-lib comments and a play-by-play routine in an attempt to illustrate how they’ll work in a field setting," said Mrs. Shearer, noting that control of wandering sheep is absolutely necessary for shearing, ad ministering medication or preparing the sheep for market. Mrs. Shearer holds a special place in her heart for the sleek, intelligent dogs. Border collies were part of her childhood days on the family farm in Elysburg. Native Pennsylvamans, the Shearers have been involved in raising sheep and prize sheep dogs and border collies for over 35 years. Jim worked as a shepherd for most of his life in Indiana County before assuming similar duties at Erdenheim Farms in Mon tgomery County. Bury M they moved to California continuing to learn more about the breed and its capabilities. “These dogs can do cattle and other types of livestock as well as sheep,” said Jim, who is now in the process of training 18 dogs. He owns six brood bitches and four stud dogs. “If someone buys a pup from me and brings it back, I’ll train it for them.
