816-Lmcaster Farming, Saturday, December 22,1984 Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser Today I’ve decided to take a trip back into my memories of Christmas in the 1920’s and compare it with our Christmas in 1984. At that time our immediate family all lived at home but now our immediate family is scattered and we look forward to having them come home. Both times the setting was a dairy farm just north of Lancaster, Pa. As the oldest of several girls a lot of work fell on my shoulders. It seemed as though I was always being sent to pick up cobs and wood chips to start the fire in our big iron cook stove. Another job was peeling potatoes and setting the table. Somehow I was also the chicken “feeder” and egg “gatherer” for many years. My but those hens could pick your hand when you reached under them to hunt for eggs. Now my Christmas Candlelight Program Presented by The Choirs of The Midway Church Of The Brethren (13 Evergreen Rd.) SAT., DEC. 22 & { SUN., DEC. 23 7:30 P.M. If we managed to save our pennies and had twenty-five cents, we thought that we were rich. I can still see the five and ten cent store on North Queen Street. Naturally, there were clerks standing behind each counter waiting to take your money for any of the many items displayed. For five cents you could buy a handkerchief, a comb, a picture or candy to give as a gift. Nowadays one is lucky to find a suitable gift for someone even if you hand over a ten or twenty dollar bill. We usually had a small tree that my father cut from our meadow. We hung red paper wreaths at our door and windows. Lately, we’ve had to buy a tree as those on our farm have grown too large. We children slept three in a bed in a room slightly heated with the kitchen stove pipe. Pity the one who slept crosswise at the bottom of the bed. Even so, we could ex pect an orange in the tip of our long, brown cotton stocking, some English walnuts in the shell and a little hard candy. No wonder we couldn’t wait for the box of chocolates that our Sunday School gave us each year. That stocking with an orange, nuts and hard candy is the one thing that has remained constant my own children can expect to find the same thing.
