Counties receive $2 million in emergency food assistance HARRISBURG - Nearly $2 million in emergency food assistance is on its way to 24 counties, according to State Treasurer R. Budd Dwyer. “We realize there is a pressing need in many of the counties for this financial assistance, especially during this holiday season.” Dwyer said. “We’re processing the requests for aid as expeditiously as possible.” Dwyer pointed out the funds for the emergency food assistance program comes from an $8 million appropriation by the Pennsylvania Legislature to alleviate the con ditions of the recent recession and to provide food for needy in dividuals. Under the emergency food program, Dwyer explained, ' allocations are based on a formula encompassing three factors - the numbers of people receiving unemployment assistance, medical assistance, and food stamps. Counties are responsible for submitting their individual applications for the funds, along with their proposed food distribution plans, to the state Department in Agriculture. Licenses for 1985 may be ob tained through county treasurers’ offices and authorized dog licen sing agents across the state beginning Dec. 1. “Anyone owning a dog six months of age or older must obtain a 1965 license under the provisions of the Pennsylvania Dog Law Act 225 of 1982, which sets forth the responsibilities of dog owners in the commonwealth,” Hallowell added. Licenses fees are $3 for spayed and neutered dogs and $5 for all other dogs. Senior citizens 65 and older pay only $1.75 for non productive dogs and $2.75 for all other dogs, but must present proof of age when applying. Owners should also provide proof of spaying and neutering when applying for their pet’s license. Dog owners mailing the fee to the county treasurer’s office must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Names and locations of authorized agents may be obtained by contacting the treasurer’s office in the ap propriate county. The 1985 license contains a registration number imprinted on, a tag designed in the shape of the state of Pennsylvania, and may be a collector’s item in years to come.
