Perry Holstein and DHIA herds honored for production Perry County dairymen were honored at the recent DHIA and Holstein Awards Banquet for high production, according to John P. Harris, county agricultural agent. Ken Sc Jane Benner, Miller stown, were recognized as high herd in the county with 20,221 lbs. milk, 769 lbs. butterfat and 660 lbs. protein. Perry County DHIA, with 4524 cows on test, averaged 16,434 lbs. milk, 608 lbs. butterfat and 530 lbs. protein. The county ranked fourth for milk, fourth for butterfat and sixth for protein in the state. DHIA Vice President Duane Hertzler recognized the out standing service provided by the three county DHIA supervisors: R. Walter Stydinger, Elliottsburg; J. ROTARY TILLERS Mike O’Toole, Blain; and David Shenk, Newport. Three herds had somatic cell counts averaging less than 200,000. They were Ed & Wilma McMillen, 146,000; Jonathan Esh, 193,000; and Alrada Farms 195,000. The M.M. Smith Farms, Newport had the highest increase in milk production per cow with an average of 2,206 lbs. milk. The highest butterfat increase average was 110 lbs., and that honor went to Ted Troutman & Sons. Robert Sc ' * 1 I Berneice Gabel topped the high protein increase with 90 lbs. Miss Nancy Dum, Perry County Dairy Princess spoke on the healthful benefit of dairy products in the daily diet. Ken Benner president of the Perry County Holstein Club, conducted the Holstein Club portion of the Banquet. Recognition awards were given to the highest producing cows for milk and butterfat for 2-year, 3- year, 4-year and aged cows. The top milk production award for 2-year Holsteins went to Ray McMillen & Sons for the cow Ray Me Arlinda Rag Apple, who produced 23,727 lbs. milk. The high 2-year-old for butterfat was Henry Acres Sabrina with 830 lbs. butterfat. This cow is owned by Del. crop meetings set NEWARK, Del. Programs for county crops meetings in Delaware have not been set. The first meeting will take place Tuesday, December 18, from 9 a.m. to noon at the University of Delaware substation near Georgetown. Kent and New Castle County producers will have a choice of two other dates: Tuesday evening, January 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Viola Ruritan Hall; and Thursday morning, January 17, from 9 to 11:45 a.m. at the Clayton Fire Hall. All three meetings are being sponsored by the Delaware Cooperative Extension Service. Programs have been tailored to meet the needs of growers in each area. PAUL B. The Ben ners also won the 3-year milk production award with Santee Acres Shiawana Violet. Her production was 24,568 lbs. milk. The 3-year hutterfat award went to Ben Dum with TGD Lift Off Sherry’s record of 876 lbs. but terfat. Ray McMillen’s 4-year-old Ray Me Jet Pride won the milk production award with 26,840 lbs. milk. The 4-yearold butterfat award went to David & Judy Roth with their Milmay Ruth Whirlhill Rose, with her 921 lbs. butterfat record. Milmay Perseus Arlinda Con tent, owned by David & Judy Roth, topped the aged cow division for both milk and butterfat. Her record was 28,872 and 1,091 but terfat. At the Sussex County meeting, the following topics will be discussed: the results of the ex tension service’s in-row tillage demonstration on 30 farms throughout the state; spread of the Dectes stem borer; an insect pest update; results of the university’s new corn hybrid testing program; impact of soil diseases and nematodes on soybean yield; and control of hard-to-kill weeds in soybeans. There will be a question and answer session at the end of each meeting.
