Dr. Wing said that, to find breed differences that are statistically significant, 5 pens per breed are needed if one is measuring yield (without giblets) as a percent. Eleven pens are needed if one measures yield as breast meat percentage. Cawley, Jr., reminds apple growers in Maryland that according to State law every apple grower who sells commercial apples in U.S. Number One canner grade or better is required to file a signed statement with the Maryland State Apple Commission showing the amount of commercial apples sold during the preceding crop season. This law also authorizes the Maryland State Apple Commission to collect an excise tax of three cents (.03 cents) per bushel on all commercial apples grown and sold in the State with the exception that the first 500 bushels sold by any grower in any one crop season is exempt from the tax. The excise tax is due and payable as follows: 50 percent not later than December 31 of each year; the balance not later than May 31 of the following year. Any tax unpaid on the date it is due and payable shall bear interest at the way to adjust for breed differences in live weights at the time of processing. Dr. Wing, who has been with Cobb’s Research and Development group for four years, recently co authored another paper with Dr. Paul E. Cotter of Framingham State College and John Swanson, a Cobb geneticist.
