D24-Lancaster Farming, Saturday November 24,1984 Tobacco auction dates set in Md. ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland Secretary of Agriculture, Wayne A. Cawley, Jr., announces that the 1985 Maryland tobacco auction season will open March 19 at the eight Southern Maryland tobacco warehouses and continue for eight weeks, closing on May 9. His announcement follows a recommendation from the Maryland State Tobacco Authority which met earlier this month. Normal sale weeks will have four sales days-Monday through Thursday. However, there are two exceptions to this schedule: opening week will have sales beginning on Tuesday, March 19th and running on Wednesday and Thursday. Easter Week will have no sale on Monday and will be a three-day, Tuesday through Thursday week. Cawley also says the Maryland Department of Agriculture will make no request to USDA for reinstatement of “designated market status” for the Maryland tobacco markets in 1985. FRANK A. FILLIPPO, INC. King - 717-786-7229 At the request of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Com mission, discussion was held at the most recent Authority meeting as to interest in designated market status which would mean that all tabacco sold on the Maryland market would have been officially graded with sellers paying for the USDA grading service. The overwhelming number of farmers who spoke on the issue of grading were opposed to it. According to the Maryland- Delaware Crop Reporting Ser vice’s latest estimate, the 1984 Maryland tobacco crop (which is what will be sold on the 1985 auction market) will come in at about 31.2 million pounds. This would be up about five percent from the 1983 crop of 29.7 million pounds. However, the good news from tobacco growers is that the 1984 Maryland Crop of Type 32 tobacco is of fine quality, thin, light leaf, as opposed to the off-quality, heavy leaf of the drought-plagued, 1983 crop. •■O ANTIC SELECTION IN Lancaster Farming's CLASSIFIEDS WANTED- Paid ITHACA, N.Y. - Light traps allowing ventilation fans to operate efficiently in poultry houses and a slide presentation ex plaining how methane in produced by agricultural by-produc ts are among seven educational aids that have brought national honors to Cornell University researchers. The circular on in-line milk coolers explains how the various types of coolers work and how much electricity these devices can save. Former graduate student Scott A. Sanford and professors David C.
