Knapp Memorial Lecture in memory of “The Father of Extension” this week in Denver, Colo. York gave the lecture, the fifth in an annual series, at the annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land- Grant Colleges at the Denver Hilton Hotel, Sunday through Wed nesday. His selection was announced today at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Mary Nell Green wood, administrator of USDA’s Extension Service, said Knapp’s success as a national leader of the farm and home demonstration system helped bring about the Smith-Lever Act of 1914, which resulted in the organization of the Cooperative Extension Service in every state. “The Knapp principle of demonstration education involved more than just a new teaching method. It represented a deep insight into the motivation and com mitment of people,” Greenwood said. York is chairman of the Board for In ternational Food and Agricultural Develop ment. He served under the five most recent Presidents on special assignments at the international level.
