Numerous awards were presented to the Lancaster dairymen and directors were elected for the coming year. J. Mowery Frey Jr., Willow Street, took home a majority of the county production awards. Awards for high milk • and fat were presented for five categories; Jr. 2-year-old, Sr. 2-year-old, 3-year old, 4-year-old, and Aged cows. The high milk record for all categories was 31,029 lbs. from MD-Gaywinds Astronaut Flo, owned by J. During the Chester County DHIA banquet on Thursday evening, six dairymen averaging over 750 lbs. butterfat for the year were recognized. Winners included, from left, Alan Mason; Alvin Stoltzfus, of Dunwood Farm; Melvin Stoltzfus of Melwood Farm; and Bobh Pepple. Not pictured were Jonas B. Stoltzfus and Ardrossan Farms. Melwood Farm received the plaque for the top record of 870 lbs. the 4-year-olds with a 1113 lb, record. Frey picked up the top milk awards in every category. Fultonway Conductor Molly topped the Sr. 2-year-old category with 25,431 lbs. milk, while Fultonway Veration Tonya, the Jr. 2-year-old, produced 26,925 lbs in 305 days. Tonya also earned the fat award in her category with 904 lbs. butterfat. The 3-year-old winner, Bowmont Elevation Name Coral, milked 26,992 lbs, while Frey’s aged cow, Fultonway Superior Ida, topped her category with a 30,792 lb. record. She produced 1157 lbs. butterfat, the top fat record of all the categories. And in the Sr. 2-year-old category, J. Warren Bender’s Milmay Elevation Arlinda Heidi had the top fat record with 1037 lbs. in 305 days. Finally, the top fat award in the 3-year-old category was earned by another Frey cow. Sunny-Craft Miranda Valiant - ET produced 991 lbs. butterfat. The junior Holstein members earned production awards as well. Holstein president Greg Landis announced three junior winners for milk and fat: Philip Rutt, 3-year old; Diane Hershberger, ♦-year old; and David Kulp, aged cow. In Holstein club elections, Roger Mills, Willow Street, Donald Risser, Bainbndge, and Harold Shellenberger, Mt. Joy, will begin three-year terms as new directors. County agent Glenn Shirk told the group that “it’s time to work smarter, not harder.” He said dairymen should make financial commitments with caution, but he said he is optimistic about the future. Shirk urged dairymen to do forage testing and to pay attention to details. State director Jay Landis an nounced that breeder institutes will be scheduled in January and February. He encouraged breeders to consider consignments to the spring sales in Harrisburg. PHA Director of Sales Steve Wilson also spoke briefly to the group and reminded dairymen that Nov. 15 is the deadline for ads in the Annual.
