NEW CASTLE- The Butler
County 4-H’ers claimed just one
more rosette than the Crawford
County 4-Hers during the 39th
Annual Northwest District 4-H
Dairy Show, held at the Lawrence
County fairgrounds, Sept. 8. By
taking all the Brown Swiss awards
and the grand, junior, and reserve
junior championships in the
Ayrshire competition, the Butler
countians edged out the Crawford
exhibitors.
Crawford won all the Holstein
championships, the Guernsey
grand championship, and the
reserve junior champion spot in
the Jersey competition.
Host county Lawrence picked up
the Milking Shorthorn grand
championship and the Ayrshire
reserve grand award. A Warren
County 4-Her showed the grand
champion Jersey. The reserve
grand and junior champion Jersey
exhibitors were from Jefferson
County, and the reserve grand and
junior champions in the Guernsey
show belonged to Mercer 4-Hers.
Erie County pulled the reserve
junior champion Guernsey.
Master fitting and showmanship
combination awards went to 39
exhibitors. They were rewarded
for their efforts with stickers,
rosettes, and trophies. Forty-nine
master fitter and 34 master
showman individual award
rosettes were given out as well.
The good housekeeping award
went to Clarion County for the
third consecutive year. The
Crawford 4-Hers retained the huge
“Good Housekeeping Banner” for
their special efforts in presenting
an attractive and neat display
during the district show.
Running two show rings during
the day kept all show personnel
busy. Type judges were Ginger
Myers, Littletown, and Bill
Ramsey of Ohio. Fitting and
showmanship judges were Dwight
Hunter and Jim McMurry, both of
Washington, Pa., and Dan Kellogg
of Rome, Ohio.
The day-long event began with
opening ceremonies, with 4-Hers,
parents, leaders, and judges
taking part. Lawrence and Butler
counties served as host and co-host
for the event.
Show chairperson was Shirley
Mitcheltree, with Barbara Rader
serving as co-chair. Mark Miller
of 1-awrence County was official
