Bl4—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 22,1984 BY BARBARA RADER Staff Correspondent NEW CASTLE- The Butler County 4-H’ers claimed just one more rosette than the Crawford County 4-Hers during the 39th Annual Northwest District 4-H Dairy Show, held at the Lawrence County fairgrounds, Sept. 8. By taking all the Brown Swiss awards and the grand, junior, and reserve junior championships in the Ayrshire competition, the Butler countians edged out the Crawford exhibitors. Crawford won all the Holstein championships, the Guernsey grand championship, and the reserve junior champion spot in the Jersey competition. Host county Lawrence picked up the Milking Shorthorn grand championship and the Ayrshire reserve grand award. A Warren County 4-Her showed the grand champion Jersey. The reserve grand and junior champion Jersey exhibitors were from Jefferson County, and the reserve grand and junior champions in the Guernsey show belonged to Mercer 4-Hers. Erie County pulled the reserve junior champion Guernsey. Master fitting and showmanship combination awards went to 39 exhibitors. They were rewarded for their efforts with stickers, rosettes, and trophies. Forty-nine master fitter and 34 master showman individual award rosettes were given out as well. The good housekeeping award went to Clarion County for the third consecutive year. The Crawford 4-Hers retained the huge “Good Housekeeping Banner” for their special efforts in presenting an attractive and neat display during the district show. Running two show rings during the day kept all show personnel busy. Type judges were Ginger Myers, Littletown, and Bill Ramsey of Ohio. Fitting and showmanship judges were Dwight Hunter and Jim McMurry, both of Washington, Pa., and Dan Kellogg of Rome, Ohio. The day-long event began with opening ceremonies, with 4-Hers, parents, leaders, and judges taking part. Lawrence and Butler counties served as host and co-host for the event. Show chairperson was Shirley Mitcheltree, with Barbara Rader serving as co-chair. Mark Miller of 1-awrence County was official announcer for the day. The Northwest District includes Erie, Warren, Crawford, Butler, Jefferson, Venango, Mercer, McKean, and Clarion counties. The 39th annual show was one of the largest district 4-H dairy shows with 139 Holstein entries, 44 Jerseys, 19 Guernseys, 16 Brown Swiss, 13 Ayrshires, and 4 Milking Shorthorns. Each 4-H animal at this show had already been selected as the best in its respective county; the district judging is to choose the best from the best to represent southwestern Pennsylvania at the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show to be held Sept. 24, at the Farmshow complex in Harrisburg. Judges for this day-long event were type judge, Dale Oliver, Atlantic Breeders Cooperation, fitting judge, Robert Rugaber, Butler County extension agent, and the showmanship judge was Patty Paul Carr, Somerset Couftty, right, exhibitor of the grand champion Holstein, is pic tured with Somerset County dairy pricess Amy Baer and Holly Edwards holding her brother Greg’s reserve grand champion Holstein.
