BYBETHNESBIT Staff Correspondent INDIANA The annual Junior Beef Livestock show was held on August 30, for all junior beef exhibitors at the Indiana county fair. The evening before the show the beef cattle barns were buzzing with excitement and the sound of exhibitors dipping their animals for the next days competition. Roy Shearer, Avonmore, son of Wilmer Shearer captured the champion title with his 1255 pound crossbred steer, while Stacey Fyock stook in second with her 1190 pound crossbreed. In the fitting and showing Swine... A bright, warm, sunny day brought many bright smiles to the faces of those participating in the hog show on August 28. Kathy Bishop the daughter of Robert and Delores Bishop, Homer City, and Linda Winebark, daughter of Clayton and Sal Winebark of Rochester Mills were the recipients of the top honors of the day. Kathy captured the champion title, while Linda left the show ring with the reserve grand champion market hog banner. Judge Robert Bankert, a York county resident, chose Kathy and Linda’s hogs over 143 other hogs in the show. After the type judging was completed, Tracy Deahl, fitting and showing judge, recalled the best fitters and showmen of the day in the ring for the final judging. Once Traci had made her decision she announced the champions to those in attendance. Denise Radomski stood on top in the senior showmanship com petition, while the junior showmanship champion honor went to Robin Palmer. Rob Mc- Crea was the best senior fitter of the show and Stacey Fyock cap tured the junior fitting title. Mr. Calvert is a sheep breeder and former sheep exhibitor in the area. Jerry McCammon a county extension agent in Cambria County was in charge of the fitting and showing aspects of the show. Mr. McCammon is the owner of a farm in Bedford County where he raises and breeds sheep. Kathy Bishop was the owner of the grand champion market lamb of the early morning show. Tom Decker of Penn Run was the exhibitor of the reserve grand champion market lamb. In the showing competition Brian Short of Home, was chosen as the senior showman, while Lisa Bash, Shelocta, received the junior showman trophy. The junior fitter of the show was Chris Zagrod nichek, Clarksburg, and the senior competition Mike Aimes was chosen as the champion junior showman as well as the champion junior fitter. Champion senior showman was John Coleman and champion senior fitter was George Winebark, a last year 4-H member. This event culminated many months of hard work. To many 4-H’ers the evening was joyful as well as sad. After a 4-H member has spent months preparing a project, it gives him a sense of satisfaction when he shakes the buyer’s hand in ap preciation. Luther Elkin Concrete was the top bidder for the 1255-pound grand champion steer at $3.10 per pound. Roy Shearer, Avonmore was the owner. The reserve grand champion steer, owned by Stacey Fyock, Penn Run weighed in at 1190 pounds. Indiana Shop-N-Save paid $2.70 per pound for the fine quality animal. Kathy Bishop, Homer City, sold her grand champion Suffolk lamb to Luther Elkin Concrete. Kathy’s 120 pound lamb was purchased for $9.50 per pound, for a total of $ll4O. Luther Ford Sales, Homer City, was the successful bidder for the reserve grand champion lamb that went for $9.25, only twenty-five cents less than the grand cham pion. This 112 pound reserve champion Suffolk lamb was owned by Tom Decker, an Future Fanner of American member from Penn Run. The average sale price of the lambs was $1.64 a pound. Those in attendance at the sale watched a total of 38 fine quality lambs sold. D.W. Patterson, Indiana, pur chased the grand champion crossbreed hog for $4.75 per pound The 240-pound hog was owned by Kathy Bishop, who was also the owner of the champion sheep. Kathy is the daughter of Robert and Delores Bishop. The reserve grand champion owned by Linda Winebark of Rochester Mills sold for $5.50 per pound to Joe Defelice’s Family Style Restaurant of Punz sutawney. A total of 99 hogs were sold at the annual sale with an average of 99 cents. Mike Orr, son of Robert Orr, Creekside, sold his 144-pound grand champion hog carcass for $5 a pound. BUI Kriser of Kittanning, an International Dealer, was the top bidder for this supreme quality hog carcass. (Turn to Page D 3)
