BY JACK HUBLEY ROCK SPRINGS - With soggy weather standing in the way of haymaking this year, extension agronomist and show chairman, Sid Bosworth, reported that neither the quantity nor quality of entries were up to standard at Ag Progress’s Hay and Forage Show. Show committee member Alfred Dugan, director of research at Milton Hershey School Farm, Jay McCarrell displays his grand champion entry. The heat dried Conestoga alfalfa was from McCarrell’s third cutting. - - jjg* CB 1000 Gehl Forage Harvester w/2 Row Head & Pickup Attachment MX 135 Gehl Mix-All w/Scales DC 1080 Gehl Mower-Conditioner BU 640 Gehl Forage Wagon (2) BU 960 Gehl Forge Wagons > DON'T DiLAT-CALL TODAY S% OWWINVOKE Vernon E. The show’s judge was professor emeritus Dr. John Baylor who chose his grand champion from the BRLINING class of partially field-dried and heat-cured alfalfa. Submitted by Jay McCarrell of Eighty-Four, the third-cutting sample was a Conestoga variety with a crude protein content of 22.9 percent and an estimated TON of 63 percent. Reserve grand champion in the hay division came from the class made up of field-cured clover entries. Clover entered by Paul Bollinger of Myerstown took the reserve champion spot with a crude protein content of 21 percent and an estimated TON of 62 per cent. In the hay crop silage division, silage entered by the Milton Hershey School Farm took grand champion honors. The winning sample was a class-two submission including legumes and legume grasses mixed, with less than 60 percent moisture. The winning submission’s crude protein content was 25 percent with an estimated TDN of 62 percent. The reserve champion silage was entered by David Witmer of Carlisle. Witmer’s silage was among the low moisture legumes and legume grasses containing more than 60 percent moisture. The reserve champion sample had a crude protein content of 22.9 percent and an estimated TDN of 64 percent.
