Recently winning Reserve Grand Champion of the open Holstein Show at the Lebanon County Fair, C Midland Mardi Judy, was also credited with having a “quality udder” by the judge. Kline’s entry was bred by Bliss Johnson and sired by Little River Mardi Gras. Hie Donald Hostetler family of Maplebound Farm captured the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners in addition to being awarded the plaque for the “best bred and owned” entry. This marks the sixth year in a row for these honors for this Parksburg farm family. “We try to breed for a balance of type and production,” stated Box 98 Boswell, PA 15531' PH 814 629 5621 Hootetter about his winning show string. With his 90 plus registered Holsteins at home, his DHIR average is currently 21,000 plus on milk and 700 plus on fat. His BAA is 106 and there are 11 “excellents” and 45 “very Good” in the herd. The Hostetter family has been showing for 15 years and topped off" a day that included first place five year old, and first place dam daughter. Hostetters’ best bred and owned winner was the first place five year old entry, Maplebound Rex Ivory. Also taking best udder in her class, Ivory was sired by Maplebound Starlight Rex, a Hostetter - bull recently leased to Select Sires. Ivory preceded this win with the Grand Championship at last year’s Farm Show. Hostetter enjoys the longevity bred into his cows and stated, “I like to breed for longevity. The longer she lasts in my herd, the more profitable it is to me.” Junior Champion honors went to the intermediate yearling of Linden Loch Holsteins, Oley. Show by Steve Shaw, Lincoln Loch Star Susie, edged out the No-Na-Me Fond Matt senior yearling show by Dale, Hostetter who took the Reserve Junior Championship. Her first time out, “Susie” boasts a “Very Good” - 87” Astronaut dam with over 19,000 pounds milk and a 3.8% test. The judge appreciated her “tallness, length, and correct feet and legs.” Doug Hershey, PHA, was on hand to invite all exhibitors to the state championship in Kutztown in September. The first time it will be held in the East, over 200 entries are expected for the show.
