B22—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 11,1984 ROCKY RIDGE, Md. - Louisa Hott, director of women’s ac tivities for the Maryland State Grange, announced that the annual sewing contest was a great success with a total of 686 entries. At the recent judging held at the New Market Grange Hall in Frederick County, awards were presented following a covered-dish luncheon 'and fashion show. All first place winners were sent to New York City for competition at the National Grange Sewing Contest. Class A division, adults sewing for adults, had the following awards presented; first, Marlene Black of Linganore Grange; second, Annabel! Mason of Jarrettsville Grange; and third, Lois Fulton of Beltsville Grange. Marlene Black, her husband Richard and children, Kevin and Teresa, live on a dairy farm in Frederick County. She is a 17 year member of Linganore Grange and is also active in the Linganore United Methodist Church and Brown Swiss Association. Her hobbies include sewing, em broidery and gardening. Margie Gilbert is a 15-year-old sophomore at Elkton High School in Cecil County. She lives on a small farm with her parents and older brother and sister. She has been a 4-H member for over five years, involved in many projects including clothing. Margie is ac tive in school, participating in the band and future homemakers, as well as in her church where she serves as acolyte. Class C, adults sewing for children, awards were presented to the following: first, Kay Flora, sponsored by Beltsville Grange; second, Pearl Russakoff of Braddock Grange; and third, Fran Wetzel of Medford Grange. Kay Flora, 24-year-old 1983 graduate of the University of Maryland, has a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising. She promoted fashion shows in the D.C. Metropolitan Area to generate funds for her graduate study. Kay plans to attend the New York Fashion Institute of Technology in September 1984. After graduate school, she hopes to go to Paris, France, for a year. Ultimate plans include the opening of her own designer boutique featuring casual and conservative clothing for men and women. Class D, for children under 13 years, winners were; first, Juliann Brauer of Thurmont Junior Grange; second, Kara Kerr, sponsored by Beltsville Grange. Juliann Brauer, nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Brauer, Sr., is a student at Em mitsburg School in Frederick County entering fifth grade in September 1984. She has a younger brother and sister at home on the family farm in Rocky Ridge. Juliann has been sewing for five years under the direction of her paternal grandmother, Florence Brauer. She is a five year member of Thurmont Junior Grange where she currenty serves as gatekeeper. She is a student of ballet, tap and jazz at the Debra Lewis Studio of Dance in Thurmont. She is active in her church where she sings on the childrens choir and serves as acolyte. On June 11 the members helped in a community rabies clinic where 300 animals were vaccinated. The members of the community service committee painted three trash barrels to donate to the Lower Chanceford Recreation areas at the school. The group was also well represented at the county fashion review by Trudy Grove, Amy Doqglas, Kandie Kilgore, Tina Hedrick, Mary Muller, Jenny Jeffries and Tabatha Hott. At the 4-H Fair the group was well represented with members exhibiting in dairy, beef, pets, bicycle, small engines, tractor, clothing, ceramics, leathercraft, gardening, flowers, small change, crocheting, handyman, quilling, wildlife, foods and quilting. During August members will be participating in day camp and the Olympics.
