And anyone contesting that statement wasn’t on the sidelines last Saturday as Andrea Richards of Boyce, Virginia, led her 3/8- Chianina steer named Jumper to the grand championship at the Northeast Region Chianina Field Day at the York Fairgrounds. Bred by P.T. Mclntyre of White Post, Virginia, Andrea’s steer was sired by % Chianina bull, DB Silver Mist, and an Angus cow. Cambria County’s John McKotch of Ebensburg took reserve champion honors with his Ohio-bred steer, sired by a Lom bard son. Lancaster County juniors were off to a running start in the steer competition, taking first place in the first four of the nine steer classes, but bowing out in the heavier classes. First-place wins in classes five and seven went to Dauphin County, with Cumberland County taking class six, and Virginia successful in classes eight and nine. A total of 68 exhibitors from four states brought 80 head of cattle to Saturday’s festivities. In addition to the steer show, the day’s events included a Chianina heifer show, competition in judging and showmanship, a fund-raising auction and a noonday Chianina beef barbeque. The Association recognizes only those animals of direct Italian descent as being Fullblood Chianinas. The American Purebred classification is applied to those cattle of at least 7/8 Chianina breeding. In heifer competition, a female named Lauxmont’s Lady “J” exhibited by Jamie Kohr of York, received judge Bill Henning’s vote as grand champion Amencan/Fullblood in the white division. Reserve grand champion American/Fullblood went to M’s Empress, owned by Eugene Moore of Warriors Mark. Since their importation little more than a decade ago, Ctuanmas have been bred with a number of colored breeds, resulting in a colored, or black strain being recognized by the Association. The blacks were well represented at the show, with grand champion honors going to DP Roda, a March 1983 heifer owned by Donald Sheiss of Chambersburg. The show’s reserve champion black was FCF Foreman’s Pen ney, a March, 1983 female exhibited by Tim Foreman of Hershey. Three divisions of showmanship competition were recognized, with Chris Hopple of Mechamcsburg topping the senior division, Wind sor’s John Eaton placing first in I^l intermediate, and Darby Smith of Red Lion winning the junior division. In the judging contest, Lance Kauf placed first in the men’s division, with June Sunday win ning the ladies competition. Junior division judging winner was Chris Hopple. Cumberland County fielded the top judging team made up of Chris Hopple, Kim Hopple and Allison Shaffer. This year’s Field Day committee was made up of Margie Brothers, Jim Foreman, Jim Glass and Jim Kohr, with Larry Moore acting as Field Day chairman.
