Summer Quilt Exhibit attracts old and new BY BARBARA RADER Staff Correspondent CONNEAUT LAKE - The third Summer Quilt Exhibit held at the High Street Community Church, Conneaut Lake, attracted a total of 74 quilts, both new and old. The church pews and basement were filled with the quilts, which represented thousands of hours of hand and machine work, during the three-day event. Taking first places in the eight divisions were: Applique - Mary Weaver, Atlantic, with “Dogwood Blossom;” Embroidery - Mary Alice Monda, Meadville, with “Love bird and heart; ” Patchwork - Thelma Patton, Sagertown, with “Mohawk Trail;” Quilting - Jane Merritt with “The Original; ” Baby Quilts - Mary Jo Johnson, Con neaut Lake, with “Antique Baby Quilt;” Cross Stitch - Edith Kijjg, Conneaut Lake, with “Flying Squares;” and Novelty - Barbara McCann, Conneaut Lake, with “Friendship Quilt.” Each quilt could be entered in only one category if employing multiple techniques, and exhibitors could enter up to five quilts. The second-place antique quilt exhibited by Phylis Martin, Conneaut Lake, will be given to the Baldwin-Reynolds Home, Meadville, a home filled with antiques for public viewing. “The Star of Bethlehem” was believed to be one of the oldest quilts on display during the show. Other quilt patterns entered in the show included, Wedding Ring, Log Cabin, Grandmother’s Fan, Around the World, Ocean Wave, Eight Point Star and Weathervain. Judges for the event were Gwen Kaltoft, Conneaut Lake, a teacher at MeadviUe Vo-Tech, and Helena Hartshome, MeadviUe, a retired teacher in the MeadviUe School District. Cash awards were given to aU first-place winners. Second, third and honorable mentions in each category received quilting books. Highlighting the show were 24 antique samplers displayed by Mrs. David Johnson, Conneaut Lake, who presented a unique talk about each of the samplers bearing many different stitches. The earliest dated sampler was 1704 and many of the others were made by young girls who were taught by their mothers or dames. Townsend shows grand champion at 4-H daily goat show TIMONIUM, Md. - Baltimore County 4-H’ers competed for top honors at the Baltimore County 4-H Dairy Goat Show held Thursday, July 12 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timomum. Steven Townsend showed the overall grand champion, while overall reserve grand champion went to Kirsten Peruzovic. Steven also had the champion Nubian. Reserve champion Nubian went to Greg Kadec. Grand champion grades also went to Steven, with reserve going to Kristine Heston. In showing and fitting com petition, Kristine Heston was named overall champion and senior champion.
