Crop management decisions
to highlight Crops Day
UNIVERSITY PARK - Some
very important corn management
decisions will be discussed June 19
during the annual Crops Day at the
Rock Springs Agronomy Research
Farm of Penn State, nine miles
southwest of the campus on Route
45 west.
For example, farmers will see
research plots devoted to starter
fertilizer evaluation for both
conventional and no-till com.
Research in conventional com has
shown a consistent advantage with
starter fertilizer, said Lynn D.
Hoffman, farm superintendent.
Starter fertilizer is still being
tested on no-tillage com, a much
' newer management system, he
noted.
Application equipment on most
no-Ull com planters makes it
difficult to place starter fertilizer
in the traditional two inches above
and two inches beneath the seed,
Hoffman said. Visitors will see
trials evaluating various ap
plication techniques for starter
fertilizer in no-till com. Joe
McGahen and Lynn Hoffman will
be available to discuss these trials
and answer questions.
Crops Day will start at 9:30 a.m.
on June 19 with a lunch break at
noon. Lunch will be available at
the farm. The day’s program will
