For example, farmers will see research plots devoted to starter fertilizer evaluation for both conventional and no-till com. Research in conventional com has shown a consistent advantage with starter fertilizer, said Lynn D. Hoffman, farm superintendent. Starter fertilizer is still being tested on no-tillage com, a much ' newer management system, he noted. Application equipment on most no-Ull com planters makes it difficult to place starter fertilizer in the traditional two inches above and two inches beneath the seed, Hoffman said. Visitors will see trials evaluating various ap plication techniques for starter fertilizer in no-till com. Joe McGahen and Lynn Hoffman will be available to discuss these trials and answer questions. Crops Day will start at 9:30 a.m. on June 19 with a lunch break at noon. Lunch will be available at the farm. The day’s program will stress management of small HOLSTEIN AUCTION SMITH-MEAD FARM At the farm located along New Design Road V/z miles southeast of Frederick, in Frederick Co., Md.
