BY SUZANNE KEENE COCHRANVILLE - Susan Kay Hostetler, 17, is the 1984 Chester County dairy princess, receiving her crown and banner last Saturday during the dairy princess pageant held in the Cochranville Community Center. Alternate Chester County dairy princess is Theresa Tkaczuk, the 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Tkaczuk, R 2 Elverson. Theresa also received the Miss Congeniality Award. Susan is the daughter of Mr. and Three contestants compete for Perry County Dairy princess title NEWPORT - The Perry County Dairy Princess Pageant will be held at 8 p.m., on June 16 in con junction with the Fourth Annual Perry County Heritage Days at the Newport Fairgrounds. This year three young ladies will vie for the 1964 Perry County Dairy Princess title. Contestants are Nancy Ann Dum, 16, daughter of Benjamin and Donna Lou Dum, Elliottsburg; Theresa Kaye Kling, 16, daughter of Mildred Estrada, Ickesburg; and R. Lynn Kling, Loysville; and Jo-Ann O’Toole, 16, daughter of Frank and Carol O’Toole, Loysville. Nancy is a junior at West Perry Senior High School where she is a member of the field hockey and track teams, chorus, band, student council, yearbook staff, school newspaper, youth education association, and Perry County Teen Contact. Nancy is an active member of both the Perry County 4-H Dairy Club and the Junior Holstein Club. Last year she was a Pennsylvania delegate to the American Institute of Cooperatives in Columbus, Ohio. She attends Messiah Lutheran Church where she is a church choir member. Her future plans include attending Sacred Heart Hospital, Allentown, to become a surgical technologist. Theresa is a West Perry junior with plans of enrolling in the Dairy Herd Management curriculum at Williamsport Community College following graduation. Theresa is quite active in West Perry’s FFA chapter as a member of both the parliamentary procedure and the dairy judging teams. She has also participated in the dairy foods judging contest, and holds both the Greenband and Chapter Farmer degrees. Theresa has completed a year of project work with the Perry County 4-H Dairy Club. She is a member of Roseburg Assembly of God Church. Theresa will also attend the 1984 PAFC Summer Institute. Jo-Ann, also a junior at West Perry, has future plans of at tending a business college to become an accountant. She is a member of the chorus and year book staff, and volunteers her time as a business and math tutor. Jo- Ann has had extensive training in both voice and piano. A member of Sandy Hill United Church of Christ, she is pianist for Sunday School and the church orchestra. In 1963, she won the Perry County Sunday School voice competition. Jo-Ann has completed two years of 4-H dairy project work. She has also been chosen to attend the 1964 PFA Youth Conference as Perry County’s representative. Following dinner and personal interviews with the judges, the contestants will be introduced and interviewed by emcee, Mr. John Harris, county agricultural ex tension agent. At 8:30, there will be a celebrity milking contest featuring Mr. Douglas Bonsall, Perry County Pomona Grange master; Mr. Billy Roush, Perry County Commissioner; and Mr. Susan Hostetter crowned Chester County dairy princess Mrs. Donald Hostetter, R 2 Parkesburg. Saturday afternoon Susan received her diploma from Lancaster Mennonite High School, then went directly to her personal interview with the dairy princess judges. Susan’s school activities in cluded school chorus and the softball team. She is also a member of her church youth group and teaches a children’s Sunday school class. In her on-stage interview, Susan said she plans to work on her Lynn Tilton, senior editor of Pennsylvania Farmer Magazine. Following the milking contest, 1963 Perry County Dairy Princess Miss Roxanne Gabel will crown her successor. family’s dairy farm this summer and then find a job working as a special education aide. If she finds that she enjoys the aide job, Susan said she would like to attend college to major in special education. Her farm chores include feeding the calves and milking the family’s 90 Holsteins every other weekend. In response to a question about why she wants to be the dairy princess Susan responded: “I love to drink milk and I like to help dairy farmers in presenting this delicious and nutritious drink.” For her promotional presen tation Susan dressed up like a granny and explained why milk is an important part of an elderly person’s diet. Alternate dairy princess Theresa Tkaczuk is a junior at Owen J. Roberts High School where she is vice-president of the FFA.
