inscription - on the right side of the
churn reads: Improved Original,
Union Chum, Pat. Dec. 20, 1864,
First Premium at the State Fairs
of Ohio, Ind., Mic., m., Wis., and N
York, manufactured official Union
Chum Co. Tiffin, Ohio.
Visitors to the Zang home will
find a rocking barrel chum in the
mud room, along with two
decorated crocks of flowers and
other country items adorning the
walls.
Nestled in the dining area by the
comer chair, a dasher, barrel
chum, butter bowl and paddles,
and a square butter mold will
invoke thoughts of how the
homemaker managed to make
butter in her time. Housewives
lived and worked by an old saying:
wash on Monday, iron on Tuesday,
mend on Wednesday, chum on
Thursday, clean on Friday, bake

Butter
chums
on Saturday, and rest on Sunday.
How times have changed!
Two glass butter churns sitting
on the dining room hutch are in
triguing because an observer can
watch the butterfat in the chum
turn slowly into a lump as the
paddles go round and round. One of
the glass jars bears this inscription
on it: Dazey Chum No 60 pattened
Feb. 14, 1922, made by the Dazey
Chum Manufacturing co., St.
Louis, Missouri. The other glass
chum has no inscription, but is still
a conversation piece, Jean said.
Jean’s interest in decorating her
home with carved wooden and
glass churns, started in 1974. Any
old working item dated in the 18th
or 19th century that will add a
small touch of country to her
home, has a place in her decor.
“They are more of collectables
than antiques,” she says of the
items which she truly enjoys.
