Beef Cookoff HARRISBURG - Ten “super beef” chefs from across the commonwealth will prepare their prize recipes in the home economics kitchen of Trinity High School in Shiremanstown on Monday, June 11, for the annual Pennsylvania Beef Cookoff Finals. Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Cattlemen’s Association and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the contest is con ducted to elicit the most delicious and innovative ideas for preparing beef. Competing in this year’s finals are: E.M. Banjack of Norristown: Miranda DeSantis of Bethlehem; Ruth Huzuda of Monongahela; Deborah Herndon of State College; Peggy Kovacs of Bethlehem; Joyce McMaster Moul of York Haven; Sandra Novicelli of Apollo; Florence Thigpen of Hanover; and Anne Tomichek of Philadelphia. The two alternates for the contest are Lorraine Alaimo of Peckville and John Wells of Danville. Their dishes are to be prepared in the high school kitchen that morning under the supervision of the contest judges. Upon com pletion and setting, the dishes are scored by a panel of three judges. Judging takes place from noon until 2 p.m. Butter chums on Saturday, and rest on Sunday. How times have changed! Two glass butter churns sitting on the dining room hutch are in triguing because an observer can watch the butterfat in the chum turn slowly into a lump as the paddles go round and round. One of the glass jars bears this inscription on it: Dazey Chum No 60 pattened Feb. 14, 1922, made by the Dazey Chum Manufacturing co., St. Louis, Missouri. The other glass chum has no inscription, but is still a conversation piece, Jean said. Jean’s interest in decorating her home with carved wooden and glass churns, started in 1974. Any old working item dated in the 18th or 19th century that will add a small touch of country to her home, has a place in her decor. “They are more of collectables than antiques,” she says of the items which she truly enjoys. slated for June 11 The top chef wins $125 in prize money and a half-expense paid trip to the National Beef Cookoff Finals in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sept. 9-11. Central 4-H Dairy Club The Central 4-H Dairy Gub met at the home of Angie and Diane Long on May 14. The meeting topic was “Calf and Heifer Management." Shannon Newman gave a slide presentation.
